"When Digital Learning Meets AI" was the theme of the 2021 conference. At the time, it represented an imagining of—and an aspiration for—the future of education. A few years on, this is no longer a matter of foresight but a daily reality for every educator. Looking back on this journey from vision to practice lets us see more clearly the real changes AI has brought to education, as well as the important challenges that remain to be solved.

At this conference, WisdomGarden CEO YC Heng has been invited to share his perspective on "Optimizing Learning with AI," exploring how AI—through learning-data analytics, personalized recommendations, intelligent assessment, and AI learning companions—helps educational institutions improve learning outcomes and create a more efficient, more personalized learning experience.

The most fundamental change AI brings to digital learning is that it moves "personalized learning" from an educational ideal toward a model that can be realized at scale. In the past, "teaching students according to their aptitude" was constrained by the one-to-many structure of teaching and difficult to truly put into practice. Today, AI-driven learning-path recommendations, real-time assessment feedback, and learning-behavior analytics allow platforms to provide appropriate support tailored to each learner's needs, moving personalized education toward large-scale application.

That said, several of the core issues examined at the conference remain highly important today. Protecting the privacy of learning data continues to be an ethical concern that the development of educational AI cannot afford to ignore. The explainability of AI recommendations is even more critical in educational settings: teachers need to understand why AI has made a particular suggestion in order to genuinely build trust and use it effectively. At the same time, how to prevent algorithms from amplifying existing educational biases also requires ongoing scrutiny and improvement.

A key consensus from the conference was that AI's most valuable role in education is to assist and empower teachers, not to replace them. What ultimately determines the quality of education is always the professionalism and wisdom of educators—and AI becomes an important partner in amplifying that value.
