2022 6th Asia-Pacific University Smart Campus Conference—Resilient and Sustainable, Empowering the Future: AI + SDGs = ∞

AI + SDGs = Infinite Possibilities: Why Smart Campuses Must Carry Both Technological Innovation and Sustainability

Resilience and sustainability are the inseparable dual mission of smart-campus development in the post-pandemic era.

Event highlights

"AI + SDGs = ∞" was the theme of the 6th Asia-Pacific University Smart Campus Conference, and it conveyed an important idea: technological innovation and sustainable development are not an either/or choice, but forces that reinforce one another and together create greater value.

This edition of the conference was held under the guidance of the Ministry of Education and the New Taipei City Government, co-hosted by Tamkang University and the U9 University Alliance, and co-organized by numerous partners across industry, government, and academia—including WisdomGarden, the Association of Private Universities and Colleges of the R.O.C. (APUC), the Association of E-Learning of the R.O.C. (AEL), the Information Service Association of Chinese Colleges (ISAC), the Tamkang University Alumni Association, the Tamkang University Computer Science Alumni Association, the ITRI College of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, and Microsoft Taiwan—coming together to explore the future direction of AI, smart campuses, and sustainable development.

"Resilience," part of the theme, has become all the more important in the post-pandemic era. During the pandemic, the schools that were able to switch teaching modes within a short time and maintain uninterrupted teaching quality were, without exception, institutions that had established robust digital infrastructure in advance. The value of a smart campus lies not only in the efficiency of day-to-day operations, but also in the adaptability and resilience it provides when facing major disruptions.

"Sustainability" on a smart campus encompasses both environmental and social dimensions. On one hand, through smart energy management, carbon-emission tracking, and resource optimization, it helps campuses advance the SDGs' sustainability goals. On the other hand, through fairer and more accessible modes of digital learning, it narrows gaps in educational resources so that more learners can enjoy high-quality educational opportunities.

AI becomes the key driving force that connects these two dimensions. Whether in smart energy management and institutional decision analytics, or in personalized learning, AI learning companions, and intelligent teaching support, AI makes sustainability goals easier to realize and enables educational innovation to scale to a much larger reach. What the "∞" represents is precisely the infinite possibilities created when AI and the ideal of sustainability come together.

As one of the co-organizers, WisdomGarden continues to advance the development of its AI Learning Platform. Through technologies such as AI knowledge-point analysis, learning early-warning, and learning analytics, it helps teachers understand their students' learning status and provides more timely, more precise teaching support—steadily realizing the vision of a smart campus and AI-empowered teaching.
